about willamette valley music fest

For over 38 years, the University of Oregon Cultural Forum has produced an annual, free music festival. This year's two-day WVMF features over 30 musical acts from a variety of music that ranges from bluegrass, blues and jazz to rock, indie and alternative. In addition the 2008 WVMF features 6 food vendors, beer and wine concessions and an art exhibit.

WVMF is an open festival format, encompassing the spaces both in and around Cuthbert Amphitheater. In addition to the main stage inside the Cuthburt Amphitheater, a second stage is located conveniently in the grassy picnic area just outside the venue. This stage showcases smaller groups and single performers. As you enter the venue from the walking bridge, the art expo tent will be located on the right, outside the main gates. This open festival format is very conducive for groups of people and families to experience the entertainment together. Many bring blankets and picnics to spend the entire day of fun with their friends.

Because of the financial support provided by the student body, the in-kind community support and the many volunteers that make the event successful Willamette Valley Music Fest is free to all and unique to the Willamette Valley!

sustainability

Working in conjunction with Rexius, UO Campus Recycling and the City of Eugene the WVMF has implemented many practices to achieve zero waste recovery. These practices include reviewing inputs and outputs at all entry points as well as setting guidelines under which vendors will operate. Additionally, both recycling and composting will be utilized during the event.

Vendors are expected to use compostable foodware, and are encouraged to reduce waste by purchasing in bulk and using items available in recyclable packaging. Styrofoam is banned at the event. Vendors have access to a site for compost, compostable foodware, glass, metals, plastics, paper, ice bags, cooking grease and cardboard. Based on waste review of previous years, the 2008 WVMF has implemented compostable beer cups, which will significantly reduce waste generated.

Public receptacles are available for the recycling or composting of bottles, cans, paper, food waste [non-meat], paper plates, napkins, chopsticks and paper foodboats. Volunteers monitor the receptacles to educate attendees about what is and is not acceptable to recycle or compost, while reducing contamination.

By reducing waste that would end up in a methane-generating landfill, the WVMF's zero waste efforts reduce greenhouse gasses produced by the event. The festival also encourages alternative transportation to and from the event by offering valet bicycle parking.

The Cuthbert is a city-owned venue leased by Kesey Enterprises, please feel free to contact them for more information on sustainable operations at the Cuthbert.
